The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits (OKCNP) will host the 2020 Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards on Thursday, August 27, 2020 (rescheduled from Friday, April 24, 2020). The event will now take place virtually. In the weeks leading up to the event, we are spotlighting the 21 finalists in seven categories.
Operation C.A.R.E. Ministries, located in Altus, Okla., is one of three finalists in the Self-Sufficiency Category. Since their founding in March of 2005, they have served thousands in their community through assistance in utility and medical bills, prescriptions, emergency travel funds, food and clothing, and more.
“Operation C.A.R.E. is a faith-based organization that has a positive impact on our community by providing quality of life services for people in crisis and with limited resources,” said Captain Raymond Minst, Altus Police Department and Operation C.A.R.E. Ministries Board Member. “Research shows people are apt to utilize counterproductive measures when they become desperate. Operation C.A.R.E. Ministries continues to serve as a bridge to keep those at risk of offending on a positive trajectory.”
Operation C.A.R.E.’s programing provides financial assistance toward medical prescriptions, testing for high school equivalence certification and utility bills
In addition to financial assistance, Operation C.A.R.E. helps clients obtain emergency lodging and makes arrangements for temporary shelter. They also help with emergency travel to doctors’ appointments and food banks, if they are unable to meet the needs of the client through Heaven’s Storehouse Food Pantry Operation C.A.R.E. assists in helping clients acquire identification for employment, school, housing, clothing through Joseph’s Closet, free dental care, and backpacks and supplies for school aged children.
“Working with Operation C.A.R.E. is an extension of my work as a physician,” Said Dr. Carol Sherman, family medicine specialist and board member, Operation C.A.R.E. “I treat the physical needs of my patients and Operation C.A.R.E. provides for their emotional and spiritual needs. I am proud of Operation C.A.R.E. Ministries being a ONE Awards finalist. It shows that they are providing our community with services that make a difference.”
