Forest Steward - Job Description
The Forest Steward lives at the Forest of Peace, a contemplative, interspiritual retreat center, to provide on-site services, and participate in a communal life with daily meditation. This is a full-time, residential position. The Forest Steward is a community member who looks after day-to-day essentials of the Forest with specific responsibilities and works with the Executive Director, Facilities and Grounds Coordinator, Guest Services Coordinator, Forest Cook and other staff to maintain a contemplative atmosphere for the community and guests.

Community activities include:

  • Regular attendance at weekly staff meeting
  • Regular attendance at daily meditations & community meals
  • Regular participation in community meetings (once a month)
  • Regular participation in occasional community outings with staff
  • Lead meditation on a rotating schedule
  • Serve as Supper Meal Facilitator (set up buffet, set food out, say opening prayer) on a regular basis

Position Qualifications:

Required/desired skills & experience:

  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) required; donor database experience (a plus)
  • Familiarity & regular use of social media (a strong plus) – Facebook, Instagram & Twitter
  • Integrity and good character (background check required)
  • Effective, well-rounded written and verbal communication skills; ability to be flexible for last minute needs of guests
  • Ability to work in and be part of a diverse spiritual community; experience of living in a spiritual community (a plus); track record of being a successful team player
  • Basic kitchen skills – meal prep & cleanup

Position Requirements:

Specific responsibilities:

Administrative assistance:

  • Provide assistance to the Executive Director on tasks & projects as needed;
  • Provide assistance to Guest Services Coordinator as needed including monitoring reservations & special needs of guests; staff office when the Guest Services Coordinator is away;
  • Enter & update guest and donor information in database for future contact and fundraising solicitations;
  • Guest Services: Provide assistance to the Guest Services Coordinator in welcoming guests to the Forest; step in when needed to assist guests with their specific needs; support & contribute to maintaining a contemplative atmosphere for guests & staff;
  • School of Spiritual Direction: Assist the School of Spiritual Direction by keeping records related to student applications, homework assignments, guest speaker confirmations, tuition payments, and graduation checklists. Also, assist with preparation of certificates and gifts for graduates;
  • Library: Ensure the smooth operation of the Forest library through cataloguing, re-shelving, and contacting guests whose books are due; this can be a supervisory role if a volunteer is identified to do above tasks;
  • Kitchen: Assist (as needed) the Forest Cook with midday meal preparation, wash dishes & ensure kitchen cleanliness during food preparation;

Additional tasks:

  • Housekeeping back-up: On days when housekeeping is unable to turn all cabins, assist with cleaning for individual cabins; wash/dry cabin sheets & towels;
  • Herbs, flower beds, watering & birds: water & maintain a small herb garden and small planted area near main house & cabins; provide daily essentials for our fine feathered friends by distributing adequate food and water;
  • Airport transportation: On occasion pick up/deliver guests to & from the Tulsa International Airport
