Position Description:

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic is completing its 30th season, and the first under new music director Alexander Mickelthwate. A $5.7 million, per-service orchestra with a full time staff of 16, the Philharmonic has enjoyed 20 consecutive seasons with break-even or surplus results. Season activity typically includes between 115 and 125 services with approximately 50 performances including its three main concert series (Classics, Pops, Discovery), education and special event performances, as well as services for Oklahoma City Ballet and Canterbury Voices. Two endowment funds total approximately $18 million. It performs in the recently renovated, city-owned and privately managed multi-purpose Civic Center Music Hall. The Philharmonic enjoys a well-developed, enthusiastic and growing patron and donor base. The musician pool is closely tied to a number of strong higher education institutions.

Oklahoma City, often shortened to OKC, is the state capital and ranks 27th among US cities in population with a greater metro area approaching 1.4 million residents. OKC has one of the world’s largest, active livestock markets, and primary industry sectors include energy, aerospace, healthcare and the military. The past 25 years have been most notable for tremendous public and private development in the downtown core, public facilities and parks, and public schools. This ‘can-do’ spirit has been a hallmark of OKC’s history and culture since its founding in 1889 as part of the Land Run of Unassigned Lands. New projects recently completed or soon to launch include a downtown streetcar system, a 70 acre downtown park, and a new convention center and hotel.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director is responsible for managing the human and financial resources of the Oklahoma Philharmonic Society in order to achieve the orchestra’s mission. To that end, the Executive Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the organization, and implementing the policies set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will serve as the chief operating officer of the Oklahoma Philharmonic Society, Inc.


  • Essential Responsibilities:
    • Provide leadership for the Society’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.
    • Lead and supervise an effective team, and work collaboratively with the Music Director and orchestra personnel.
    • Ensure the development and implementation of personnel training and development programs which will provide the human resources necessary for the achievement of the Society’s mission.
    • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality staff and volunteers.
    • Serve as the chief spokesperson for the Society, and thereby see that the Society is properly presented to its various constituencies.
    • Develop and enhance relationships with donors, volunteers, educators and other supporters of the Society to ensure the good reputation of the organization in the community and enhance its fiscal footing.
    • With the President of the Board, enable the Board to fulfill its governance function and facilitate the optimum interaction between management and the Board.
  • Management:
    • With the Music Director, assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of orchestra’s artistic objectives.
    • In consultation with the Music Director, seek and obtain new opportunities for performances by the orchestra.
    • Ensure effective communication with the Society’s constituencies: Orchestra League, Associate Board, orchestra musicians, Philharmonic Foundation and Oklahoma City Community Foundation, public agencies, other arts organizations, Civic Center Music Hall, government agencies, and the general public to achieve the service objectives of the Society.
    • Assist the Board, Music Director, Development Director and Orchestra League in fundraising activities, including annual fund drive, corporate sponsorships, special events, endowment campaigns, planned giving program, and identification and cultivation of donors.
    • Work with Director of Marketing/PR to ensure effective public promotion of Society activities and concerts toward maximization of potential earned revenues and ticket sales, utilizing up-to-date strategies including print, digital, direct mail and other media opportunities.
    • Recruit, select, and supervise administrative staff. Promote, discipline, and terminate in accordance with legal requirements and Board policy. Evaluate staff performance as needed but at least annually in writing.
    • Maintain documents according to legal requirements and/or Board policies and procedures.
    • Ensure that all employer responsibilities are met and that the organization is in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws.
    • Keep abreast of activities and developments in the orchestra field; advise the Board of matters that may be helpful to promote the orchestra’s objectives.
    • Direct advocacy activities at local, state, and federal levels in accordance with applicable law. Monitor legislative activity that affects the orchestra and recommend appropriate action to the Board of Directors.
  • Budget and Planning:
    • Assist and participate in the development and implementation of an annual, master financial plan for the orchestra that supports the artistic, financial, special events and public relations objectives of the organization.
    • Develop and implement current and long-range administrative and personnel planning to ensure that the organization is effectively structured and staffed competently.
    • Monitor and authorize expenditures in accordance with approved budget.
  • Board of Directors:
    • Advise the Board on matters within the Executive Director’s scope of responsibilities to promote the efficient operation of the orchestra in the delivery to the public of the services of the Society.
    • Staff the Board and its committees; ensure that meeting minutes are recorded and filed.
    • Serve as ex officio member of all Board committees.
    • Attend all meetings of the Board and Executive Committee; prepare and present reports for each Board and Executive Committee meeting and for other committee meetings, as required.
    • Working with the Board Development Committee, help to identify and recruit qualified candidates for Board membership; assist with new member orientation.
  • Administrative:
    • Along with the Development Director, oversee the preparation and submission of grant applications and reports to foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
    • Ensure that all contributions and other support are acknowledged as may be required by law and as is otherwise appropriate; maintain accurate and complete records of financial contributions and other substantial support.
    • Work with the Music Director in the selection of guest artists, guest conductors, performing groups, and programs to support the orchestra’s artistic objectives.
    • Assist Music Director in hiring of all musicians; negotiate and execute individual contracts according to approved budget and policies.
    • Along with the General Manager, negotiate contracts for all guest artists within budget parameters as set by the Board.
    • Negotiate and execute Civic Center Music Hall leases and permits, as required.
    • Handle correspondence, including patron suggestions and complaints.
    • Maintain adequate insurance to protect the Society’s assets/property.
    • In cooperation with Finance Director, develop, implement, and monitor compensation and benefits programs.
    • Prepare and revise job descriptions, employee handbook, and employment policies.
    • Serve as chief liaison to local office of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM).
    • Successfully negotiate the master agreement with the orchestra and the AFM.
    • Ensure proper implementation of the master agreement.

Minimum five years experience in a senior level position at a regional orchestra or larger
