The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits (OKCNP) will host the 2020 Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards on Friday, April 24, 2020, in Tulsa, Okla. In the weeks leading up to the event, we are spotlighting the 21 finalists in seven categories.
Cross Timbers Hospice (CTH), located in Ardmore, Okla., is one of three finalists in the Health Services category.
CTH has been serving South Central Oklahoma since 1981, according to their website. “We are people who care and are dedicated to helping those with terminal illness and their families live each day to the fullest.”
“Hospice focuses on the quality of life,” according to the CTH website. “It is their goal to provide comfort and ease pain, while focusing on the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of their patients, who have six months or less to live.
Not only does CTH provide doctors and nurses, they also provide chaplains, caregiver support and bereavement counselors.
“I had the most wonderful moment yesterday,” said Beth Marshall, board member and volunteer. “I was with Ms. Smith (name has been changed to protect the patient’s privacy) and her sister. Joe, the pet therapy dog, was with Ms. Smith, sleeping as she petted him. Ms. Smith and her sister were watching the Sound of Music and singing “The Hills Are Alive.” It reminded me of my mom and the childhood memories I have. It was wonderful having those memories flood over me in such a peaceful moment.”
According to hospice.io, CTH has served approximately 389 Medicare beneficiaries, with an average age of 81, since becoming Medicare certified on April 4, 1996.
“CTH is an incredible gift from God to our community,” said Lorenzo T. Collins, past board member. “They took our family by the hand and were there emotionally, spiritually and financially during some of the darkest times in our lives. We could never repay them for the love and kindness we were shown during times of unknowing pain, sadness and loss.”
