Oklahoma Blood Institute Wins ONE Awards Top Honor - 2009 Charles Schusterman Award for Excellence
4/25/2009
The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits named Oklahoma Blood Institute the Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards’ top nonprofit for 2009 at its second annual ONE Awards event held tonight in Tulsa. Nine more agencies were winners of their unique category of service, and 17 received finalist awards. In total, $160,000 was awarded to 27 of the states top nonprofits for 2009.
“All 27 of tonight’s ONE Awards honorees were selected for the excellence shown while accomplishing their mission, and for the high standard they set for the sector statewide,” said Joe Moran, chairman of the 2009 ONE Awards, and member of the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits’ Board of Directors. “Oklahoma Blood Institute is a shining example of this high standard in every way. We look to them, and all of tonight’s winners, with the highest esteem because they are a model for others working to achieve this recognition.”
Oklahoma Blood Institute’s (OBI) mission is to provide the safest and highest quality blood, services, and health programs to the patients and communities they serve. OBI has grown to be the tenth largest regional blood center in the United States and a
nationally recognized leader in blood banking. Oklahoma Blood Institute is a blood provider for numerous Oklahoma hospitals and medical facilities. All recipients of blood from the Oklahoma Blood Institute receive blood that exceeds FDA mandated safety standards. With the help of nearly 700 employees working with as many as 800 volunteers and 2,600 drive coordinators, OBI continues to grow in capacity and impact. In addition to its headquarters and laboratories, OBI maintains four donor centers in the Oklahoma City area with regional centers in Tulsa, Lawton, Enid, Ardmore, Ada and Ponca City. OBI also operates the Texas Blood Institute in Wichita Falls.
Dr. John Armitage, CEO of Oklahoma Blood Institute, accepted the Charles Schusterman Award for Excellence on behalf of his organization. They were also awarded a $10,000 monetary gift.
Honorary Chair of the 2009 ONE Awards Speaker of the House Chris Benge was accompanied by his wife, Allison Benge. The Honorable Chris Benge addressed the group of more than 350, expressing his esteem for the nonprofits of Oklahoma and their inspiring work. “I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to see firsthand the dedication and steadfastness exercised among Oklahoma nonprofits,” said Benge. “The challenge of a nonprofit to achieve their mission effectively and accountably with the limited resources allotted them is a great undertaking and deserves to be recognized.”
The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, which works with and on behalf of Oklahoma nonprofits to strengthen capability and build capacity of their boards, staff and volunteers, created the ONE Awards with a dual purpose.
“Our goals in creating this event were first, to recognize outstanding nonprofits that are judged to be excellent in the way they pursue their mission, and second, to increase statewide awareness about the roles that nonprofits play in contributing to the quality of life and to Oklahoma’s economic development, said Moran.”
A total of 27 nonprofits were honored in 9 categories of service including: Arts & Humanities, Community, Community Health Services, Education, Health Services, Self-Sufficiency, Seniors, Sports & Recreation, and Youth Development. The winners in each of nine categories received $7,500 and two finalists received $5,000.
The finalists were selected by the ONE Awards Selection Commission chaired by Mr. J.Jerry Dickman of the Chapman Foundations of Tulsa. Others on this year’s distinguished Selection Commission were: Mr. Michael A. Cawley, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc., Ardmore; Ms. Nance Diamond, Community Leader, Shawnee; Mr. Frederick F. Drummond, Rancher, Pawhuska; Mr. R.H.
