Standards for Excellence Series

   Minimize
Standards for Excellence is a national program taught across the country. Funders are starting to ask if nonprofits have graduated from this program because it is a leading authority on ethics and accountability in the nonprofit sector. This series teaches best practices in the areas of mission and program, public affairs and public policy, governing body, conflict of interest, human resources, financial and legal, public accountability and fundraising.

The foundation of the Standards for Excellence program is the published Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. It identifies 8 major areas of nonprofit governance and management, contains 55 implementation goals, and provides a structured approach to building capacity, accountability, and sustainability in your organization. Each organization taking Standards for the first time must send two people to each of the four trainings, preferably the Executive Director and the Board Chair. Special circumstances prohibiting this to take place may be presented and are approved on a case by case basis. All four courses must be attended by both participants to graduate and be added to the graduation list on the Center website.

What You Will Learn:
  • Eight guiding principles and 55 performance standards
  • Core values of honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, compassion and responsibility
  • Model for self-assessment and best practices
  • Empowerment tools to help nonprofits meet the highest standards of nonprofit governance, management and operations
  • Code for self-regulation of the nonprofit sector
  • Best practices in the areas of mission and program, public affairs and public policy, governing body, conflict of interest, human resources, financial and legal, public accountability and fundraising
What You Will Get:
  • May send two representatives to each of the four clinic series classes
  • Receive a hard copy and electronic version of the Standards for Excellence Educational Resource Packet Manual, which contains information, sample policies, forms and other resources to help organizations implement the standards
  • Receive an electronic copy of the Standards for Excellence Model Employee Handbook
