The Power of Nonprofits

   Minimize
While many know the social value of nonprofits, the scope of their reach is not widely recognized. Nonprofits touch every aspect of society, from the arts to disaster relief.  In fact, many services people take for granted, such as hospitals, homeless shelters and foster care programs, are provided by nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits play a critical role in our communities, often filling in the gap and going where government cannot.

Economic Impact

   Minimize

  • Nonprofits employ 10% of the workforce and contribute nearly $322 billion in wages.
  • If the American nonprofit sector were a country, it would boast the 7th largest economy in the world.
  • With over 19,000 nonprofits in Oklahoma, the sector accounted for over $12 billion of revenue coming into the state in 2010 and claimed $34 billion in assets. (By comparison, according to the IRS Census, in 2002 the real estate sector only brought in $2 billion in revenue.)
  • Oklahoma nonprofits save taxpayers money by investing $8 billion in the state each year through their programs, resources and salaries.
  • Thousands of Oklahomans would be without food, shelter or medical care if nonprofits did not fill the void.
